I went to the JUCO everybody laughed at because it was so horrible (mainly because I wanted to play baseball) and Brown Mackie was the school we laughed at. Their outreach campuses make it almost a technical college. Hope that helps a little.

Sanford Brown offers a course in Diagnostic Sonography but they're NOT accrediated by CAAHEP. Does anyone know what would happen if I did go to this school? WOUld I be able to get a good job with decent pay? Would I have to work for a certain amount of time before I could take the RDMS exam?…………Is there anyone who DID actually attend this school? If so what was your outcome?

I have not attended this school, but if it were me, I would not attend a program which is not accredited by CAAHEP. I would be willing to bet that you would have a hard time finding a job upon graduation.
Also, Sanford Brown is notoriously expensive. Why spend an arm and leg to attend a non-accredited program?

When thinking about entering an ultrasound program, you need not be concerned so much about certificate vs. degree. What is important is that you go to an ACCREDITED program, whether it is college or hospital based. An accredited program allows you to take your registry (licensing) exams upon graduation. Once you get licensed, you will never be asked about your schooling again. An employer does not care what route you take to get licensed, they just want you to have that license.

Don’t waste your time or money on a NON-accredited program. Upon completion and graduation from a NON-accredited program, you must work in the field of sonography for a full year prior to taking your licensing examinations. But, you will have a hard time finding an employer to hire you, unless you are licensed.

You can find a list of accredited schools in your area, by searching “diagnostic medical sonography” and your state at the following site. There are links provided for each program, which will give you additional information (including course duration and prerequisite courses):

But, you will have a hard time finding an employer to hire you, unless you are licensed.

I would suggest you observe an imaging department to get an idea of what ultrasonographers do daily. There is much more to it than scanning pregnant women. Most people have no idea how much is involved in this career!

You can find a list of accredited schools in your area, by searching "diagnostic medical sonography" and your state at the following site. There are links provided for each program, which will give you additional information (including course duration and prerequisite courses):

http://www.caahep.org/Find_An_Accredited_Program.aspx

Sanford Brown in Atlanta is an accredited program, but SB's programs are generally very expensive. There is also a hospital based program in Atlanta. I would check that one out first.

Many people, myself included, go to school to become a radiologic technologist, before continuing to ultrasound school. In fact, it can be difficult to get into u/s school without the RT license. There are many more choices for schools for x-ray in most states. You can find them here, by searching “radiography“ and your state:

http://www.jrcert.org/cert/Search.jsp

The pay for ultrasound technologists will vary, depending on experience and geographical location. The American Society of Radiologic Technologists just did a large salary survey, in 2007. You can see how much a RT and/or ultrasound technologist averaged, per year, in your state here:

My private Catholic school has some serious health issues. When it comes to emergency medical care, they only have a nurse once a week. The school has brown spots and bits of a mold-like substance on the ceiling in several places. The ceiling also has open parts with electrical wires in the open. The school itself has terrible teachers. Many of them do NOT have the appropriate degree(s) for the subject(s). Around 80% of the lockers are easily broken into and items are stolen. The principal mentally harasses the students through screaming and threats. The pipes leak and in the cafeteria, one of the pipes burst and brown water rushed out onto the table. That table itself wasn’t aloud to eat their, but we still had to eat in the cafeteria with the constantly smelling and leaking pipe. The crappy air conditions don’t work and constantly give a draft. The heat barely works and the school decided they wanted to buy a new speaker system instead of fixing the heat. The school discriminates by whether you play sports or not. Many other things are wrong but those are the major ones.

I want to report them for health problems and accreditation but I’m not so sure how to. Any help would be appreciated.

right a letter to the governors office or the school boared.or you can call your local boared of health and ask them for phone numbers and how to go about filing complaints.

Which of these universities are better for pre-med?

For medical school?
University of Washington
Harvard
Duke
Stanford

Chenelle is right about the undergraduate work.
According to US New & World Report, in 2008, the University of Washington was ranked number 1 in medical schools for training in Primary Care for the 15th straight year! (http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/grad/med/search/specialities+program_family_yn+program_internals_yn).

Although Harvard & Johns Hopkins are numbers 1 & 2, respectively in Internal Medicine, the U.W. is 6th. (http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/grad/med/internals)

Harvard was #1 in Pediatrics, and U.W. is 7th (http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/grad/med/pediatrics)

For a specialty in Rural Medicine, U.W. is #1 (http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/grad/med/rural)

So, as you can see which medical school is better depends on what you eventually want to go into!

I've been thinking about it for a while, and I think I want to go to college in HI (or CA), which are prob the 2 farthest states away from me (I live in Rhode Island) haha

It's not really the geography/weather that makes we want to go there…I think part of the reason is because I know that if I stay in my small state, I'll finish premed, then go to Brown University for medical school, then I'll work at Rhode Island hospital…when I'm old (If you go to college in state, chances are u'll stay in state for work, because of connections)…and I'd rather explore what's beyond RI and New England. The other part of my decision is because my mom would lock me up in a metal cage if she could…and she wants me to leave no farther than an hour from her. So, I kinda want to get away from this lack of freedom too (not that I'll become a hardcore partier in college haha).

Should I just try it, and if accepted, go to either an Hawaiian/CA Univeristy? Do you reccommend any? I heard that Chiminara and Univeristy of HI @ Manoa are pretty good

I understand wanting to move away from home. But just remember, you don't have to go THAT far to get away… Sometimes it's nice to be a little closer if something happens in the family, etc. My nephew lived in Delaware and wanted to go to Colorado. So he did and then later decided to take classes closer to home in Delaware for a bit. Then he changed his major and went to college in Missouri.

I recently moved to Florida from Maryland (about 1000 miles) and being away from some of my friends has been more difficult than I thought it would be. But the weather here is awesome!! Supposed to be about 80 degrees on Christmas Day!

Good luck to you.

Also, which school offers the best education for a medical degree in anesthesiology? Lastly, do they still give a discount in tuition if you live there at Oxford or Cambridge?

It is unclear to me whether you are asking about admissions to the medical programs or to the undergraduate schools. Based on other questions you asked in your history, it looks like you most likely are asking about undergrad admissions. For all of these schools, it is significant where you are a citizen–if you are a US citizen, Oxford and Cambridge are much harder to get into, and if you are British, Yale and Brown will be harder, because you will be considered an international student (this is something that would also be applicable to med school admissions). Almost all schools drastically limit the number of int'l applicants, and some don't take any. In nearly all situations, you aren't elligible for any financial aid if you are int'l (unless you are from some 3rd world or other extreme situation that makes you an academic amazement).

In the US, Brown accepts 14% of its applicants and Yale accepts 9%…but it is important to realize that Yale has many more applicants who shouldn't bother to apply (i.e. who inflate the applicant pool and thus deflate the admissions rate) because of the slightly more renown name. That being said, those %'s fluctuate year to year, and when I was in college a few years ago, Brown's admissions rate was actually lower than Yale's. The scores on SATs and ACTs for both schools are roughly the same when you look at reported median 50% range, with means in the low 700's on each section and Yale usually reporting median ranges about 30pts higher than Brown's. I don't think this should be taken as too much of an indication in "hardness" of admissions, b/c I do think that Brown is a little more accepting of lopsided applicants who got a super math score, but not such a great humanities ranking (or the other way around), which means the median ranges are a bit distorted. They do this b/c they don't mandate a core curriculum; it reflects the school's general philosophy that encourages students to pursue passions instead of replacing them with "breadth" courses they don't like. Both schools are similar in character and seek a similar type of applicant…I would say that when it all comes out in the wash, they are roughly the same. I had many peers who got into Brown and wanted Yale (but didn't get in), and many who got into Yale but wanted Brown…the difference in selection between the two is not something you will be able to quantify.

If you look at statistics for Oxford and Cambridge, you see the same type of relationship, with Cambridge ranking slightly higher than Oxford…but negligibly so.

And as I mentioned before, you can't really relate the selection of the British schools with the American ones, b/c you would need an entire applicant pool of dual citizens (or citizens of neither location).

Now…if you are looking at Med school.
Yale is significantly better than Brown, but it is hard to predict whether it is actually harder to get into, b/c Brown's medical school only started accepting general applicants (I.e. not through special channels) 3 years ago, and only offers a few spots. Because people don't bother to pay attention to the fact that Brown only accepts something like 10 people and Yale accepts roughly 100, Brown gets a disproportionate number of applicants that put its admissions rate below 4%, while Yale's is about 7% without that effect.

Regarding tuition, because Yale and Brown aren't public, the price is the same regardless of your state residency. In both cases, you see a slight preference for applicants from the home state. These facts apply to undergrad and med school admissions.

Lastly, all of these schools will prepare you well for med school and successfully send many undergrads to med school each year (almost all who apply get in somewhere). And, since you primarily get the general foundation of your medical education in med school, and you don't regularly do a clerkship in anesthesiology, the difference in preparation you get from one school to another for anesthesiology is negligible. (And if you didn't know it, med schools seriously discourage you from indicating that you think you are on path to a specific field because you don't possess the experience to make that call. It hurts you in the admissions process). To get a good residency/fellowship and to specialize in anesthesiology, it is simply most important to get good marks in medical school. I know that there are many Irish schools that operate on this same basis, so I assume that Oxford and Cambridge are the same, but you should not take my word on that.

Good luck.
