I am a senior at high school planning on traveling aboard to Argentina for 2 months. I am planning on participating in community service where can do one of the following:
- Volunteer in orphanage
-Help teach soccer to children with disability
-work on environmental projects restoring parks.

Which activity would be best for medical school? Do you that med school would like the fact that I went aboard to Argentina or not really since I did it during senior year at high school?

It is better to wait until college when you actually get credit and there are international study offices that will help you. Also, it's cheaper and you get your money's worth. None of these AFS deals will work – better to work in a medical clinic for an exchange and colleges have those. For high school, volunteer locally in a free medical clinic or the hospital. You didn't say if you live in a small town or city. Check out the Committee for Safety of Foreign Exchange Students too. Lots of good info.

I am an American citizen, and am interested in attending Medical School in New Zealand. Does anyone know if they allow foreign students into their medical programs? Does the degree transfer back to the US? I'd like to hear personal accounts of people who went to college for anything in New Zealand from the US and what it's like. Any information would be great! Thanks!

Hi.

NZ is a tiny country (4M people), so you would be lucky to get "personal accounts" …. so I'll answer a bit.

We have only 2 med schools. One at Auckland Uni. The other at Otago Uni. Not sure what their requirements are for foreigners. Try their websites: www.auckland.ac.nz & www.otago.ac.nz

Our univ education is pretty good, so a med school degree here prob would transfer back to the US. (I know that a vet degree does.)

HTH

Regards,
Rosalind.

I am a currently a graduate student and work in health care sales. I have a non science undegrad and my grades were not very good. I graduated with a 2.23, which I know is horrible, because I was not mature and not focused. After working for a few years, I studied hard and did pretty well on the GMAT (690 and a 5.5 in writing) and was let in on a conditional basis to an MBA program through an AACSB acredited state school. I have a 3.8 and will soon finish my MBA. But in working at hospitals, I have developed a passion for the clinical side and want to become a physician, even if I have to go to a foreign school in the Caribbean or eastern europe to do so. I'm planning on getting a science degree from another school to get a new GPA, although I know schools will see my old grades too. If I can do well in my new degree, say a 3.5 or better and do above average in the MCAT (say a 10 or better in each subject) , is it realistic to hope for med school? Any advice?

Go for it and if you do as well as you hope, don't let your first undergrad GPA concern you. Admission committees love seeing the success stories. Not everyone matures at the same rate–some of us take longer and our life experiences that we encountered make us better physicians.

I want to become a cardiothoracic surgeon. I am currently attempting to get through undergraduate as rapidly as humanly possible by taking a minimum of 26-29 units per semester. Do I really need to obtain my undergraduate degree before going to medical school? Is there another, faster wasy of doing this? Can anyone provide me with a link pertaining to items of this nature. Should I consider going to medical school in a foreign country where undergradurate degrees are not a arequirement (UAE, Greece, Etc)? THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIKME AND ASSISTANCE!! : )
Sorry, I should have been more specific. I have a 4.0 gpa at UCSD.

You cannot get accepted into med school without an undergrad degree. Taking so many hours at once has got to take its toll on your GPA. Careful, cuz some med schools count your GPA even on classes you've retaken. Also, you need to take the MCAT. If you are having GPA problems (3.0, 3.1) then you need to score at least 33 or 34 on the MCAT. Why the hurry?

I currently attend UGA (Go DAWGS!). I have a 3.6 GPA and got a 32 on the MCAT. I have over 500+ volunteering hours at a hospital in numerous faculties. I've been on a foreign medical mission trip. I have over 200hrs shadowing three different doctors. I've started a church youth group and am currently the leader. I tutor small elementary children. I played intramural soccer for 2 years. I've organized numerous clothing and food drives and done over 100 hrs at a soup kitchen plus over 150hrs at other volunteering activities. I'm the Sunday School Treasurer of my church and leads the Teen Choir and I play the keyboards. I also worked 10 hrs a week.

Am I a good candidate. I don't think that its enough though. I wanted to get more leadership positions and maybe publish some independent research.
I have great time management skills though.

I think if you pick your schools wisely and apply broadly that you should have a good shot (assuming you also have a good science gpa and your MCAT score is roughly evenly distributed). If you haven't already, take a look at the MSAR to pick your schools.

If you're applying this cycle, the 2 most important things are:

1. Write an amazing personal statement. People tend to dismiss the personal statement, but it's incredibly important…it's what (unless you have a 43 on the MCAT) catches an admissions officer's eye, it's what interviewers use to frame your interview, and it's one of the things admissions committees turn back to when making the final decision. Draw upon your volunteering and other experiences, have your premed advisor look it over, and write draft after draft. Avoid the typical premed cliches.

2. Get your applications in early (by August)….never, ever go by the actual deadlines. And by "in" I mean complete, including secondaries and letters of recommendations. Schools will not look at your application until your file is complete. Many schools have rolling admissions, and fill their interview slots in the order that applications are complete…and most schools start admitting people before they even finish interviewing, and even before the admissions deadline. When I applied, the school I ended up attending filled its class completely before the deadline for the *primary* application (nevermind the secondary). You have a better chance getting an interview if your application is in early (again, someone with a 42 and who cured cancer can apply late, but the rest of us mere mortals should apply early).

Good luck!

- Volunteer in orphanage
-Help teach soccer to children with disability
-work on environmental projects restoring parks.

Which activity would be best for medical school? Do you that med school would like the fact that I went aboard to Argentina or not really since I did it during senior year at high school?

Not really if you do it in high school because you don't get credit. Colleges have international study offices that offer exchange programs related to the field you are interested in so choose something in the medical field. Check out the Committee for Safety of Foreign Exchange Students for help. This will help you a lot.

I know that American medical schools are more strict than foreign medical institutions. However, i also know of a good number of very successful doctors in america who acquired their MDs in the Carribean, Poland, Pakistan, India, etc.

So with a willingness to travel outside of the country, what are the chances of one to be admitted into a medical school with a GPA lower than 3.0 but higher than 2.5?

The individual asking this question is very determined and bright and is capable of excelling beyond what his GPA shows, however due to the responsibility of long work weeks and attending full time classes (and a little bit of partying, haha…) the students GPA has not been too great….

The student has a strong resume and access to some sources for letters of reccomedations..

what are your five top choices for medical schools, which provide MD degrees which are acceptable and respected amongst the medical community in the US?

Gosh, sounds like a really bad idea. The kid couldn't even get a 3.0. It doesn't take much of an effort to get a 3.0 if you have half a brain.

In order for this kid to be entered in a med school anywhere, some other kid who had a 3.5 or better and is a pretty good kid, is going to have to be turned down. Why would they do that? I guess in a few cases, they would let him in if he could pay a lot of money… but I think he has already proved that he isn't cut out for it.
