I start college in the fall, and I have plans to major in biology. If I don't get into medical school, however, a biology degree will be pretty worthless, since I want to be a doctor, not a biologist.
If I major in English instead, will I still be able to get in to medical school? I realize that it would be harder to pass an exam with a language degree, but I'm overly concerned about my success as a biology major…
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
My friend majored in English, took the MCAT and is finishing her last year of residency.
I have an "English" degree, make a very spectacular living as a grant writer, teach creative writing at a prestigious college where I'm also a doctoral candidate in Sociology. My boyfriend is a physician and majored in chemistry. My father studied law, got his JD and three years later went back to medical school and has been a Radiologist for 30 years. My mother studied social work then later went to med school and has been a practicing physician for nearly as long as my father.
*shrug*.

Well i need all of this stuff 4 a projest so i hope someone can help!!!!!
Thanxz,
BeBe
I am an RN, and worked for many years with an oncologist who specialized first in blood dyscrasias like Leukemia, and then specialized in breast cancer for the rest of his career. He is a very close friend of mine so I know what he had to do to get to where he was. He went to College 4 years and got his BS degree. THen he went to Harvard Medical school for 4 years. When he graduated, he was an MD, and did his internship in our 1000 bed teaching hospital. After 1 year of internship he became a resident in medicine for 2 years and then became a Captain in the army for two years. When he came back he went into practice as I previously mentioned. This was over a period from 1958 – 1990. I hope this helps.
Oh, and while he was doing this he also got his fellowship in radiology.

if i take AP classes in my first year of highschool and the rest of the years does it mean i graduate earlier??
How long is medical school after you finish college and highschool! Make it detailed please!!!!!
I doubt you'd graduate early because of AP high school classes. In my experience, colleges want you there as long as possible and will do everything they can to keep that diploma out of your hand. I've known people who have graduated early, but the only way I can see that happening is if you take 2 classes every summer and 18+ hours every regular semester.
High school takes 4 years to complete.
A bachelor's degree at a college/university ideally takes 4 years to complete (this is known as undergraduate). If you're Pre-med and don't major in Biology/Chemistry the extra classes may push you over a semester or two.
The coursework part of medical school takes 4 years to complete. After you are done with that, you'll do your residency. The exact length depends on your specialization. The very shortest residency would last 3 years, while some specializations will require as long as 7 or 8 years.
Medical school is not for anyone who is 'in a hurry.'
So it would take 11-16 years of school after you graduate from high school.

19 years old attending community college. Still in general education courses.
If you major in Psychology, you get your PhD, but you don't need to go to medical school unless you plan on becoming a Psychiatrist (who prescribes drugs etc, where as a psychologist can't). To get your PhD it's probably 4-5 years of undergrad, 4-5 years of Master's and Doctorate work, maybe more if internships are involved.

I want to go to med school to be a pediatrician. HOw long is the school?
Medical school is 4 years. However, you need a 4 year degree before you apply. So that's 8 years in college. But don't forget the residency as well. So a long time.

I want to go to medical school in the future and I've done research and plenty of websites say that you have to go to another college before going to Medical School. I thought you could apply straight out of high school but I'm glad that you have to go to another college before then because I'm a hard worker and this will motivate me better than just coming out of high school when people don't really know what they want to do in life.I live in SC also so please list possible colleges before Medical School that are close to SC.
Most medical schools require at least a bachelor's degree before acceptance into medical school (and those that do not rarely accept anyone without at least a bachelor's). However, there are a few programs that offer 6-7 year programs that are combined BS/MD programs right out of high school. They allow you to go through a specific program as an undergrad and take your pre-med requirements. You can apply for medical school after your 2nd/3rd year of undergrad and enter without officially graduating so it only takes 6-7 years to get through. You still have to take the MCAT and entrance into the program does not automatically enter you in the class of medicine (but if you recieve certain MCAT scores and have a certain GPA you will get in). There are not a lot of these programs and I don't know of any specifically in SC, but Baylor and Washington University offer such programs. Good luck!
