I have a interview for medical school admission soon, and I want to know what kind of question I might get.?

December 23rd, 2008 by admin

and some tips on how to answer them. any help?

Why do you want to be a doctor? Typical what are your strengths and what are your weaknesses? What separates you from the other applicants? What is your work experience? How do you manage stress? They will also most likely give you a hypothetical situation….like you know you are having a patient who has had an MI but your attending doesn't agree with you but you are sure that the patient had a heart attack what do you do? What is the most memorable patient you have had (if you had volunteer experience)? Tell me about yourself.

Be yourself. Practice…perhaps with someone who can give you the best insight and who knows you well. Sit up straight…Be yourself! Its just casual conversation in Med. school interviews!

Any doctors or people who interview medical school applicants??

December 21st, 2008 by admin

I will be applying for medicine as a graduate next year in London, England, and I was wondering if any doctors or admissions tutors etc could tell me if this work experience will help my application along well. I have worked with young people and children in my local community for 11 years in many ways, and I am looking into volunteering with Childline and also becoming a member of a prison members board which will involve helping to improve lives for female prisoners. I will also be applying for full time employment in the NHS once I complete my degree in Biological Sciences in May, perhaps as a HCA or something similar with lots of patient contact. I have done shadowing work experience before too, in 2 different hospitals. Does my experience sound sufficient enough for applying to a Graduate Entry medicine course?
Could you please also add details of whether you are a doctor.student/interviewer etc, it'd be interesting for me to see where the advice is coming from, thanks

Yes, it certainly does. However, you might like to get hold of a copy of 'Degree Course Offers 2007' by Brian Heap (or 2008 version if available yet) and turn to the 'Medicine' courses. There, you will find a section entitled 'Interview Questions' which will give loads of possible questions that you may be asked at interview. Also, a section entitled 'Reasons for Rejection.' Read it all carefully – remember the '5 P Principle' –

'Perfect Preparation Prevents Poor Performance.'

They will want GOOD reasons for you wanting to become a doctor, evidence of a caring, ethical attitude to patients, ability to speak to patients in simple, plain language and evidence of cultural interests. They do NOT want science geeks. When did you last go to the theatre, to an art exhibition, what novel are you reading, sports, etc, etc.

Be sure to look at the Prospectus for the university to which you are applying. Look at the CONTENT of each of the 5 years of the course. They WILL question you about your knowledge of their course. Not all courses are exactly the same.

Do not be arrogant at the interview. Amazingly, many young men are arrogant. It will sink you.

Good luck!

Medical school interview potential question, If you want to help people, why not social work?

December 15th, 2008 by admin

I would like to go to medical school but I am having trouble approaching this question. My original answer was that " I have a lot of respect for members of any field that make a difference in other people's lives but I want to be a physician because I can help others more directly. Furthermore, while no one likes to admit it, I want a modest lifestyle for my family while enjoying what I do everyday. Different fields require varying amount of schooling and i am willing to make the long commitment to be a physician and let my family live comfortably."
—————————
I don't want to be insincere and I would appreciate some feedback about my answer and if I come off as money-hungry. Thank you.

ya i dont think i would say about the money. it doesnt look good, because that means you are getting into the profession for the wrong reason.

maybe you can say something about how you are intrigued with medicine and science, and although social work would be rewarding, you want to further your scientific knowledge and be able to practically implement the biomedical approach to health and healing.

Should I wear my engagement ring to my medical school interview?

December 12th, 2008 by admin

I have an interview this Thursday for med school. Should I wear my engagement ring or should I keep it off?
The reason I was thinking I wouldn't wear it was because I didn't want them to think I wouldn't be committed to school 100%. They may start asking about when we are planning the wedding and wonder if (since it is June 2009) it would interfere with my first year of school.

It was actually my fiance's thought so he wouldn't be hurt by it. He knows he is my world. He just doesn't know if it is a good idea to let them know that… haha.

don't wear it.

i have a friend who swears that this is the reason she didn't get in. granted, that's just secondhand knowledge, but if i were you i wouldn't….just in case.

also, my husband is a medical student and said that they were a lot harder on the people who were engaged or married….they said that it showed a "lack of commitment" to the medical profession. sad but true.

as much as i'm sure you love to wear your bling, i'd skip it for the day.
