I have a couple of male coworkers. I also have a few male friends and family members who work as Medical Transcriptionists. =)
Most employers require years of exerience. HOWEVER, many will waive this requirement if you graduate from an AHDI 'approved' school.
AHDI is the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity – www.ahdionline.org (formerly known as the American Association for Medical Transcription). AHDI sets the standards for MT courses. Employers know that graduates of these 'approved' courses have gained the skills necessary to begin their career as an MT.
If your looking into Medical Transcription pay the extra in tuition to attend an 'approved' school. When I was researching school options, I called several MT employers. I spoke to their Human Resources departments and asked about getting started in the field. All of them recommended attending an AHDI approved program. Many people have received training through inadequate programs only to find out that they are unable to find a job.
I attended Career Step and recieved a job (at-home) less than a week after graduating. I've received several more job offers since, but have stuck with my original employer. It can be a difficult job, but I love it!
I recommend CS because they are partnered with MANY employers, self-paced (you can finish in a few months or take as long as over a year or two), and more affordable than the other top 2 courses. Plus, I have personal experience (and success) with the program.
Attending your local community college will give you a good chance at a job in-house, but if you are wanting to work from home, an online 'approved' course is the way to go.
Good luck!

I am looking for a legit online school to take courses on being an at home medical transcripionist.
There are three very good schools for medical transcription known as "the big/top 3." They are as follows:
1) M-Tec
2) The Andrews School
3) CareerStep
CareerStep training can be taken via Everett Community College in Everett, Washington and it can also be taken through San Juan College in San Juan, New Mexico. If you take the CareerStep training through a community college that offers it, you can get Financial Aid if you qualify. The only drawback is that you will have to take the classes based on the college's school/academic year rather than your own self-paced schedule.
I hope the above is helpful.

I am interested in seeking a certification in medical transcription so I can work from home, but do not wish to go back to (& can't afford to) school full time for 2 years to do so and would like to get certified from a course such as Career Step or similar. I wondered if there is financial aid available to help pay for that?
It depends on the school. Financial Aid can get a little complicated with online schools, but there are plenty that are authorized to offer a variety of Federal and State financial aid programs. Of course, other schools aren't. Generally, when a school DOES offer financial aid, they will say so. If getting Financial Aid is really important to you, consider "shopping around" for an online college until you find one that definitely offers financial aid. Make sure you give them a call to find out how to qualify (i.e. if you have to take a certain number of classes, etc.).
A site I've used…

Hope that helps.

Medical transcriptionists translate dictated medical reports into printed formats. Working with physicians and other health care professionals, transcriptionists are responsible for the accurate and timely completion of medical reports, including history and physicals, consultations, operative reports, discharge summaries, pathology and radiology reports, chart notes, and correspondence.
This intensive online one-year program provides “hands-on” experience transcribing a variety of medical reports of all specialties (ENT, cardiology, orthopedics, gastrology, urology, oncology, internal medicine) from actual dictation. All material is transcribed with accuracy, clarity, and timeliness using microcomputers.
