What school should I strive for? Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, or Yale?

January 12th, 2009 by admin

Well I’m only in 8th grade but I really try to do my best in school. I’m a good student. I currently take Social Studies, rigorous LA, Science, Gifted Research class, and Algebra 2 with the toughest teacher around. I am also likely going to go into some form of law but maybe medical.

I think out of those four colleges go to the one where you live closest to and you should go to the one what you think is best for you.

Do I have a shot at Stanford, U Penn, or another Ivy League school? Any advice to help improve my chances?

January 10th, 2009 by admin

I am a junior in the state of Illinois.
GPA: 4.447 (I still have two semesters before apps so a potential 4.55 GPA)
Class Rank: 6th (again subject to change)
PROJECTED SAT (I have not taken it yet) – 2200+
Extracurriculars – Varsity Academic Bowl (JV MVP for 2 yrs)
- Model United Nations – Verbal Commendation at MUNI conf.
- Student Council Rep. a good chance of being the Sdudent Rep to the School Board next yr
- WYSE – Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering
- Cross Country – Varsity and JV Levels
- Varsity Tennis
- Martial Artist – 10 years of involvement and currently a high purple belt, having won awards at the state level in my freshman year
– Penwasciz – Program at the local hospital – get to witness procedures, gain medical experience, assist patients, etc.
- 4 years of volunteering at the hospital – guest services rep
- Work Exp: Sears Cashier (3 mo.)
Additionally- Marquette Young Scholar Program – accepted and recieved an A,plan to attend Stanford Summer School

You won't know until you apply. A couple of suggestions: explain GPA scale; many schools use a 4-point scale. And how can you project a score on the SAT? Crystal ball? Finally, a small point, learn the difference between verbal and oral.

If I do this major with these classes, then Will I be able to go to medical school?

January 8th, 2009 by admin

I am majoring in Biochemical Engineering and I really want to go to medical school. My top choices are Stanford University, Harvard University, Yale University, UCSF, UCLA, USC.

Can I still go if I get my BS in Biochemical Engineering? If it depends on classes, then I am taking these classes below:

CSCI 101LFundamentals of Computer Programming3

Will I be able to apply to medical school? Thank you for your help.

For the schools you mention probably not. They only take the cream of the cream which to be blunt your grades do not indicate you are. For most medical schools though you will probably get in. With those subjects and grades you should be fine.

Thanks
Bill

What should I do if I want to go to medical school?

What should I do if I want to go to Medical School?

I am majoring in Biochemical Engineering and I really want to go to medical school. My top choices are Stanford University, Harvard University, Yale University, UCSF, UCLA, USC.

Can I still go if I get my BS in Biochemical Engineering? When I go to Stanford medical school admission, they do not have any requirement. Can I still apply for medical school? By the way, I am doing my BS at the University of Southern California (USC). Is there any special classes requirement that I have to take? Thank you for your time.

You can major in anything and go to medical school as long as you take the premed courses in bio, chem, physics and math. Keep in mind that the schools you listed do not contain some of the top medical schools in the country – Johns Hopkins is at the top of every list, not Harvard, and U Washington at St. Louis is in the top 5.

The main thing is that you are a well rounded applicant. Id suggest you do some research on the med school admission process. Alot of people dont realize exactly what it entails.

Im going to give you a resource thats great for premeds.

SDNnetwork.com better yet
http://forums.studentdoctor.net (or just search sdn forums in google)

Sign up (so you can ask questions and reply) BUT you can browse though questions similar to yours and more asked by premeds.

Many med schools have different admission stats. Some have GPA cut offs, MCAT cut offs. Id suggest that you work hard in whatever your doing. Do things you enjoy ( extra curricular or EC's) volunteer, shadow, research, and so on just to name a few. Make sure you have all your med school requirements.

Youll find what you need on those 2 sites. ONce there, youll get access to more questions, answers, and youll probably get info so you can do more research on your own.

ALSO talk to your schools premed advisor. They should be a GREAT resource for you. You go to a good school so im sure theyll be helpful in letting you know what you need to do to be a succesful qualified med school applicant

GOOD LUCK!
=) I hope all works out for you.

I'm in high school right now, but my goal is to get into Stanford Medical School…?

January 2nd, 2009 by admin

I know they have a really good pediatrics unit and a pediatrician is always what i have wanted to be, but anyway that is my dream and right now i am doing pretty well in my high school (i convinced my parents to send me to private school for hs because it would give me a better education). I have mostly all honors classes and A- averages. The only problem is although i know what med school i wanna go to i have no idea what undergrad school i would like to attend!

i know you guys will want to say like yale or harvard or something like that, but i doubt my parents would be able to pay for an ivy league med school AND ivy league school before med school, however i'm afraid if i don't get into one of those school for my pre-med school years i wont be accepted into stanford…

are there any other colleges with good science programs (for before med school) that are a little cheaper that anyone knows about?

help would be appreciated A LOT.
p.s i don't care what anyone says about stanford, NO ONE is talking me out of it =]

If you do very well at a state college, you do have a shot at Stanford Medical. Realize that the peds unit would be where the residents work, and you rotate through ALL areas not just the ones you want as a student (3d and 4th year).

Take as much math, chemistry and biology as you can at your HS (including early college courses or AP). Continue that in college, and focus on internships and research opportunities in the field to make you a more appealing applicant.

I didn't do medicine, but I did a BA at a middle-rank state school (with top grades but not all As) and later got into an Ivy business program. Top schools look for diversity in their class, and that includes a combo of public and private schools for UG. Make the BEST of your UG experience and you will be competitive.
