College Chances?

January 12th, 2009 by admin

What are my brutally honest chances at:
1. Boston College
2. Boston University
3. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
4. University of California at Irvine
5. Tufts University

1. 3.9 GPA
2. About 1000 Hours Of Community Service
3. SAT 600, 600, 600
4. Advanced Drama (Lighting), Play Production
5. Cast Member Of Television Show At School
6. President of Future Medical Careers Club
7. CSF
8. NHS
9. Honors Classes- Geometry, Algebra, Chemistry, Math Analysis
10 Pre IB Classes- Spanish 3
11. AP Class- Physics
12. Student Of The Month (Does That Matter In Admissions?)

If you have any other colleges in mind, let me know. Thanks to all! (This is what I will look like next year when I am a senior)

Okay, your GPA is good, if thats the unweighted of course. If it's weighted, eh, not that impressive..

Community Serive – Wow! That's impressive!

SAT – decent, but not really outstanding

Drama/Play helps for extra activities

NHS helps as well

Honors Classes…could be more, but good.

Spanish 3 is good! Three years is what colleges like to see.

AP Physics is good.

Student of the Month is just a small thing.

I'm assuming you live near Boston? I think you have a fair shot at BC and BU. UNC-Chapel Hill…the SAT and lack of high academic classes might hurt a little bit. Chapel Hill is VERY hard to get into outside of North Carolina. Not sure of Tufts or UCI.

Hope this helps! Biggest thing your senior year: Keep up your grades. Don't slack off; colleges hate that.

Good luck!

HELP! What colleges will accept me?

January 4th, 2009 by admin

Hi,

What type of school do you think I would be able to get into? University of Florida? Cornell? (I really just want to go there b/c of Keith Olbermann…) Duke? Tufts? University of Miami? Anything?

I have a 3.5 unweighted gpa and 4.8 weighted. I could’ve had a 4.0 but I slacked off majorly when my father died my freshman yr. I know I didn’t try as hard as I could but you never really get over death. I think it’ll be in the 5.somethings by the time grades lock because I’m taking 5 APs (and have As in all but 1 B)

I took 2 APs my junior year (Bio-3 and Eng-5) and am currently taking 5 as a senior (Eng, Environmental, French, Gov (then Econom) and Art History as an online class) along with keyboard I and debate and business ownership III (honors).

I’m an active member or board member of:
Speech & Debate secretary (1st place regionals, semis for states #12, national qualifier), Drama (backstage techie until this year when i tried out for a part and got it), FBLA secretary (1st place regionals), NHS (i lied. i’m just in this club just 2 be in it. inducted and lots of comm. serv. tho), SNHS (i bake for fundraising…)
I go to health fairs and observe medical procedures and translate when I can. (creole, french, some spanish)

National Achievement Scholar Semi-Finalist and I’ve turned in my application already to go for finalist status. Is it that that big of a deal? Tufts encouraged me to apply and try to get this scholarship for minorities…

I’ve never taken SAT/ACT… but I will this Saturday!

O yeah. I didn’t go to nationals for debate b/c I decided an internship awarded by Howard Hughes Medical Institute over the summer at the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis doing research was better. They started on the same date. A week in las Vegas w/ my annoying debate coach v. like 2 months doing research to cure spinal cord injuries….

You have tons of credentials. Apply wherever you want. Colleges understand things like death in the family, personal illness, familial illness, anything that can make your grades suffer. The languages help, as does the community service and loads of APs. Honestly, if you can get high scores on your SAT and ACT, you’ll probably have your choice of schools. The trick is to cinch a kick-ass interview where you can, and play up your strengths. I’d get a move on, though, and get those applications in.

Do I have a good chance on getting in to Georgetown/UMich/JHU?

December 31st, 2008 by admin

I'm applying to U Michigan (AA), Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, University of VA, Tufts, Cornell (my reach) among others. Do I have a fair shot at getting in to these schools?

-attended a small NY public school

-3.8 unweighted GPA, well over 4.00 Weighted GPA

-rigorous school record. full schedule all 4 years, all honors and AP classes my school offered. doubled up on sciences.
- act: 30 comp, 33 in math, 30 in science, 28 and a 30 in reading/wr (i am retaking them after some prep)

i'll just touch on some of my extracurriculars…
-3 season vars athlete. vars Soccer and varsity Track all 4 years. an accomplished and dedicated Equestrian with show experience

-did an internship at UCLA medical center last summer and I volunteer full time at a hospital

- cap of the Mock Trial team, NHS, Sadd, National Science Honor Society, NYLF/NYLC alumni

-08-09 School President, + 3 years of student gov experience

I think you'll get into UMich, UVA if you're in state and that you're a reasonable candidate at Georgetown , JHU and the others if you rank in the top 5% of your class. 2 or more points higher on the ACT will make you a much stronger candidate. You might also try the SAT, aiming for a 2100 plus.

From what I've seen, you are definately qualified to get accepted into all of these colleges. Good grades and extracirular actitives look great on your college application which actually increase your chances of getting into a good college.
So, good luck!!

Will I get accepted to these colleges?

December 27th, 2008 by admin

I have a 4.4 weighted GPA and a 3.8 unweighted. I have taken a rigorous course schedule, including AP Biology, AP World History, AP Physics, AP Chemistry, AP Statistics, AP BC Calculus, and AP French. Other than that, almost all of my classes have been honors level. I got a 2200 on my SAT (1444/1600), a 730 on my Biology SAT II and a 700 on my Math Level II SAT II.

My extracurriculars include:
-About 200 hours of community service
-Member of the Mathematics, Science, and Technology Academy
-Volunteer work at Georgetown University Hospital, a hospital in Iran, and tutoring others.
-Internship at the National Cancer Institute at which I wrote a paper that is pending publication in a medical journal
-Planned a charity event for Barack Obama
-Member of the French, English, and Science Honors societies
-Campaigned for Barack Obama as the representative for my school

I’m applying to Carnegie Mellon, Johns Hopkins, University of Chicago, UC Berkeley, UCLA, Northwestern, Cornell (where I have legacy), Georgetown, and Tufts. What are my chances at these schools? I am not applying anywhere early decision because I am not really sure there is any specific school I want to be bound to. I live in Maryland and I am a first generation Iranian.

Lookin’ good sweetie! Good luck wherever you end up, and remember, HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!! that is the most important thing.
