Are these classes good for getting into like UCLA?

January 12th, 2009 by admin

I'm trying my best to get accepted into UCLA medical school, though I'm not sure if I have a good chance of getting into the school with these classes:

Sophomore*:

-English 2 (H)
-French 2
-Biology
-PE2 (Cross country, soccer)
-Geometry
-World History

JunioR:
-Chemistry
-AP English 3
-alg.2/trig
-french 3
-AP US history
-Sociology/Psychology (optional, should I take it?)

senior:
Ap eng. 4
Ap. french 4 (lit)
pre-cal (H)
Ap gov./eco.
Ap psychology
Ap physics

*Also for my sophomore year, will it be better to skip French 2 and do Art history (ap)? or just skip ap art history and do ap french 4? I want to get into ap psychology in Junior, but my high school req. is to take an AP class before Junior. AP art history is the only AP class I can take right now. But that means i can't take french 4 AP (unless I take summer school for french 2?). *sigh* With my Math and Science classes, it will be tough.

Since UCLA Med school is a graduate school, I am assuming you mean that you are trying to go to UCLA as an undergraduate.

If that is the case, then your schedule probably couldn't look any better.

Unless you really like art, I would take French 2 instead of Art History AP. Ultimately, taking French AP will benefit you more because not only will you get college credits, but, if you are good at French, you will probably want to take the French SAT IIs (SAT IIs are required for UCLA).

If you do take any summer classes, try to get ahead in math. There are tons of high school students that finish up calculus these days, so if you can get ahead in math, it will make for a better high school transcript.

Don't take anymore AP and honors classes as you can handle. You don't want your homework load to overwhelm you. It may be better to take a few regular classes, and use that extra after school time to join a sport or get involved in another extracurricular activity. UCLA gets a lot of 4.0 students who take AP classes, so they llike to see those extracurriculars too.

Remember that bad grades, even if it was in an AP class, never look good on an application. I am sure that after your junior year, you will have a good feel as to how many AP classes you can handle your senior year.

Good luck.

Is it possible to get into the UCLA medical center if you attended a community college?

January 10th, 2009 by admin

I know I shouldn’t worry about funding my education, but my family doesn’t have that much money. Attending both a university (the two I’m interested in is UCLA and UCI respectively) and a medical school (UCLA or UCI) would be incredibly pricy. Grades are not a problem for me, but I need a less expensive way to get to the point I want to get to.

Can I go to a community college and still get into a medical school?

well, right now im in a community college and am shooting medical school, particularly UCLA med school. 3 in the nation woot woot! All you have to do is get good grades in the community college, then transfer to a university, maintain a 3.8 gpa, get a high mcat score, and apply your senior yr! with high grades you can get financial aid, possibly loans, and scholarships!

If I decide to get an undergraduate degree in nursing, would it still be possible to go to medical school?

January 4th, 2009 by admin

I am currently a high school senior and am applying to the UCLA school of nursing. If I get in, I think that it would be a great opportunity to get a bachelors degree in nursing. My only problem is that I am indecisive. I know for sure that I want to get some kind of a career in the health care field but I don't know the specifics yet. If I do attend the school of nursing but decide later that I want to go to medical school or graduate school (to be a doctor, pharmacist, physical therapist etc), would it still be possible to pursue the career while holding a bachelor's in nursing? Would I be able to cover the required courses for entry into some kind of a medical school while studying nursing?
Thanks!

You can get your bachelor's degree in anything you want since the other programs you are considering are all graduate level courses. However, a BS in nursing will not cover most of the prerequisites for PT, PharmD, or MD. Each has a very specific recommended course list. The PharmD and MD would probably be most closely related. Declaring a major in chemistry would probably put you closest to PharmD, biology for MD and biology, movement sciences or kinesiology for PT. So, if you want to go into nursing, it would take you extra time to complete the prerequisites for the other programs.

UCLA pre med , med school, and nurosurgeon?

December 29th, 2008 by admin

So i have decided 100% that i have decided to become a nurosurgeon (im only in 9th grade) im planning on going to UCLA but i need Some more information i now that ucla offers pre med and medical school how many years is that 6 or 8?
and how good is the school there? and i still dont understand the concept of residency and were can that take place?can it be taken place at the ucla campus?

i have no idea why the first person to answer this question said that u need to do 4 yrs undergrad and 4 yrs pre-med. actually, undergrad is pre-med.
well first u need to get ur undergrad (u can call it pre-med but its actually the life sciences program) which would take abt 4 yrs. then u need to spend 4 more yrs. at med-school for MD. then u need to spend another 2-4 years to obtain a PHD in neurology (since u mentioned that u wanna be a neurosurgeon).
after that, u probably have to spend about 2 yrs. for residency. and then finally, u'll be done with it. lol so it will take u abt 12-14 yrs to become a nerosurgeon.

im actually planning to be a cardiologist.
