What should I wear to a medical school interview in Hawaii?

January 12th, 2009 by admin

I’m a girl, by the way :)

I’ve been hearing that Hawaii is much more laid back, and that I should dress in the “Aloha style”–but I’m not sure what that means, exactly!

I’ve got a skirt suit and a pant suit, but I feel like both would be too formal. Should I just wear the slacks or dress skirt from the suits with a button-down, without the blazer? Is a short-sleeved blouse okay? Do I wear pantyhose with the skirt? What kind of shoes should I wear?

Sorry for all of the questions–but thanks in advance!!

You wear a suit if you’re a man and a formal business attire for a woman. It’s no different than anywhere else.

I live in Hawaii. You never show up to a professional interview wearing aloha attire. You will make a very bad impression that you’re not really serious about the interview.

You should definitely wear a full skirt suit to your interview, instead of a pants suit. Most importantly, you MUST wear pantyhose to the interview. Never mind the “Aloha style”, dress to impress! Once you get IN to medical school and start your classes, THEN you can “Aloha Style” all you want. Wear closed-toed professional pumps. Imagine what an airline flight attendant would wear.

I would recommend wearing pantyhose to any interview. Pantyhose make you look professional and add a final polish to your attire. If you were job hunting and got the job, you might discover that their dress code is relaxed. Fine, no biggie, because you can always discard the pantyhose AFTER you’re been hired.

In your case, medical school admission, imagine if you and another lady candidate interview on the same day. You might both have the same grades, education, and work experience. In a case like this, you and she would be in a tie for first place. If she wore pantyhose to her interview and you didn’t, who do you think will be more likely to accepted as a student?

Pantyhose for interviews 101: A natural looking nude is the most conservative shade of pantyhose, and therefore, the most appropriate for an interview. If “nude” does not match the color of your legs, match as closely as possible to your own natual skin tone. If you are inexperienced with pantyhose, I’d recommend L’eggs Sheer Energy withOUT the control-top. Control-tops do wonders for the figure, but can be very uncomfortable for pantyhose newbies.

If you are still unsure, go to the hosiery department of a better department store, like Nordstrom, or a corsett/foundations shop. Their expert and courteous staff will give you the help you need.

    Good luck!
