What You Should Know Before Cosmetic Surgery

September 2nd, 2009 by admin

Before you decide to take any steps when it comes to cosmetic and plastic surgery, it is best to be prepared and think about all those important factors seriously and consider the issues at hand.

Thinking Before Getting Cosmetic And Plastic Surgery

One of the most important things that you need to realize about cosmetic and plastic surgery is the fact that, as with any other type of operation, there are certain risks and complications which can occur, and so you need to not only recognize these, but as well be comfortable enough with them to want to go ahead with your particular operation.

There are always some comlications that may occur, although the biggest number of plastic and cosmetic surgeries goes without any problems at all.

For instance, one of the most common danger of cosmetic procedure is infection; once the procedure is completed, several days to a week later you may experience infection in or outside of the area that you were cut and this can lead to serious and major problems.

This happens especially in procedures such as breast augmentation and rhinoplasty, as these two are two of the most serious cosmetic procedures of all. But the numbers are on your side and the risk of something like this happening to you is so low that you shouldn’t worry about it at all.

Being acquainted with the risks, dangers and possible complications of a specific surgery doesn’t mean you must have a nervous breakdown, it is just a way to prepare yourself for anything that may actually happen so you can react the best way possible in that situation.

Remember to make sure that you get the best plastic surgeon that you can, and that you take all of the time you need to talk to them and to understand about the procedure as well as the possible side effects, risks and complications. You procedure should come out fine and you won’t have any problems or issues if you inform yourself and get as much knowledge as possible on your type of surgery.

Cervical Artificial Disc Replacement Surgical Procedure

January 4th, 2009 by admin

OR-Live.com webcast January 24, 2008 at 6:00 PM CST From Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, Baton Rouge, LA

Cervical disc replacement surgery would most typically be done for patients with cervical disc herniations that have not responded to non-surgical treatment options and are significantly affecting the individuals’ quality of life and ability to function.
An artificial disc surgery may be done instead of an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion. The advantages of the artificial cervical disc replacement include:

Maintaining normal neck motion
Eliminating the need for a bone graft
Early postoperative neck motion
Faster return to normal activity
The indications for a cervical disc replacement include symptomatic cervical disc, which may be causing arm pain, arm weakness or numbness with some degree of neck pain.

The standard surgical procedure for a disc replacement is an anterior (from the front) approach to the cervical spine. The affected disc is completely removed including any disc fragments or bone spurs. The disc space is prepared to relieve pressure on the nerves and the artificial disc device is implanted. The patient typically can go home within 24 to 48 hours with minimal activity limitations.

Jorge Isaza, MD will perform cervical disc replacement for this webcast. Dr. Isaza is a graduate of Universidad del Valle Hospital in South America. He completed his fellowship and residency at Tulane University School of Medicine, Department of Orthopaedics.

Fraser Landreneau, MD, will join Dr. Isaza as the moderator during this webcast. Dr. Landreneau will take viewers through the cervical disc replacement by explaining the process and answering questions from the viewing audience.

Dr. Landreneau earned his medical degree from Louisiana State University Medical center in Shreveport. He completed his residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas and completed his fellowship at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Department of Neurosurgery in Western Australia.

Our Lady of the Lake is the largest private medical center in Louisiana, with more than 700 licensed beds and a 12-parish service area.
