If I decide to get an undergraduate degree in nursing, would it still be possible to go to medical school?
I am currently a high school senior and am applying to the UCLA school of nursing. If I get in, I think that it would be a great opportunity to get a bachelors degree in nursing. My only problem is that I am indecisive. I know for sure that I want to get some kind of a career in the health care field but I don't know the specifics yet. If I do attend the school of nursing but decide later that I want to go to medical school or graduate school (to be a doctor, pharmacist, physical therapist etc), would it still be possible to pursue the career while holding a bachelor's in nursing? Would I be able to cover the required courses for entry into some kind of a medical school while studying nursing?

You can get your bachelor's degree in anything you want since the other programs you are considering are all graduate level courses. However, a BS in nursing will not cover most of the prerequisites for PT, PharmD, or MD. Each has a very specific recommended course list. The PharmD and MD would probably be most closely related. Declaring a major in chemistry would probably put you closest to PharmD, biology for MD and biology, movement sciences or kinesiology for PT. So, if you want to go into nursing, it would take you extra time to complete the prerequisites for the other programs.

You need certain pre-requisites and general liberal arts classes for both nursing and premed. A lot of the same courses are required for both. It takes about 2 yrs to fulfill the required courses. In the meantime you can checkout all the health care professions out there. Some you might not have thought about or knew about. Some professions like nursing have different levels. Nurse practitioners are able to write out prescriptions and see pts. in private practice or hospital settings as independent practioners. They can become midwifes or nurse anesthesists. Also medical schools would look favorably upon a Bachelors degree in nursing. Good luck

Everybody that is indecisive, is indecisive cause seek aprovation of other persons. Probably you have afraid wrong, but is impossible never wrong, is wronging that learn, haven´t afraid take decision.

If your'e indecisive the best major you could have is biology. Because Biology majors are generally Pre Med, you can always switch to Nursing from Pre Med, but switching to Pre Med to become a doctor after you're in the nursing program WILL SET YOU BACK. You should def double check with your guidance counselor, but Biology sounds like it will be the best thing for you until you decide because you have a lot more flexibility.
